Photographing nothing

Taking the title from Robert Kaplan's history of zero, The Nothing That is, I'm wondering how little I can record in a photograph and:

1. the location still be recognised
   
2. still be good to look at

I'm just beginning to experiment with this idea and claim for it to be original. I just find it interesting.
